The Figure Drawing Workshop
a weekly open life-drawing session
Bologna, Italy

The (tiny) Studio.
Italy is, of course. the Academy of figurative work in western culture. There is nothing more important to the figurative artist than immersing oneself in the cities of this country. Bologna is centrally located in northern Italy and offers easy access to most of the important works of our humanistic heritage that must be seen and absorbed in ones lifetime. However, this workshop is not here to prolong the past, but to build upon it. There are no anatomical dissections, no proportional measurements, and no marble poses. We work fast, get past the exterior and focus on the living moment within the human form. Perfect rendering is now the role of the photograph and commercial advertising. The real is moving, imperfect and transitory. This workshop is entirely self-guided, each participant encouraged to search for a new place for the figure in the contemporary world.
Sunday afternoons from 3 to 6:30 PM.
Seating is limited so reservations are required.

We are a small, on going group of artists interested in practicing and improving the skills necessary to further the art the human figure. We are also a school, teaching not only through the exchange of ideas and suggestions gained from working together as collaborators in this great pursuit, but with the guidance and example from your host Richard Burkhart MFA, BFA, MA, whose extensive background in drawing from the live model spans some of the most important schools and ateliers in New York, from the Pratt Instituite and The Art Students League to the ex-Project of Living Arts in Soho. Beginners are welcome, but expect to learn from doing and watching others in their practice; technical direction and suggestions are best gained privately, you may think of yourself as an intern rather than a student. There are a plethora of guides available for learning systems. Most of the members here are busy working on finding meaning in the unique.
Please note: this is a small, participation based group. Sessions will be cancelled spontaneously for lack of sufficient participants to cover expenses.
